As a drone photography enthusiast, having the right gear can make all the difference in capturing stunning aerial shots. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, knowing what to pack is crucial for a successful outing. Today, I’m sharing what’s in my drone photography bag—let's take a look!
1. Drone
First and foremost, the star of the show: my drone. Depending on the type of photography I plan to do, I usually opt for a lightweight, portable model with a good camera. Features like GPS, obstacle avoidance, and a long battery life are essential for capturing those perfect shots. My current photography drone is the DJI Mavic 3 Classic.
2. Remote Controller
The remote controller is my lifeline in the sky. It’s important to have a controller that feels comfortable in your hands and has intuitive controls. Some models even come with built-in screens, which can be a game-changer for visibility.
3. Charger
A reliable charger is a must-have. I always ensure I pack a charger for both the drone and the remote controller. Nothing can be more frustrating than having a dead battery when you’re ready to fly!
4. Micro SD Card
High-capacity micro SD cards are essential for storing those high-resolution images and videos. I always carry a spare, just in case I find myself in a location with breathtaking views that I want to capture or find myself with a corrupt card.
5. Drone Landing Pad
A landing pad is a fantastic addition to my gear. It protects the drone’s undercarriage and helps ensure a clean takeoff and landing, especially in grassy or sandy areas.
6. Landing Gear
While many drones come with built-in landing gear, I like to have additional landing gear for extra stability. It helps to keep the drone clear of dirt, rocks, and moisture, ensuring it’s ready for the next flight.
7. Spare Batteries
Having spare batteries is crucial for extending flight time. I usually bring at least two extra batteries, so I can keep flying and capturing as many shots as possible without a long wait in between.
8. Spare Propellers
Accidents happen, and having spare propellers can save the day. I keep a set in my bag, just in case of any mishaps during flight. It’s a small investment for peace of mind!
9. Glass Lens Cleaner
To ensure crystal-clear shots, I always bring along a glass lens cleaner. Before I take off I wipe clean the Drone lens.
10. ND Filters
Neutral Density (ND) filters are essential for controlling exposure and capturing smoother video footage. They help me achieve that cinematic look, especially in bright conditions. I always carry a couple of different strengths.
11. Non-Polarizing Sunglasses
Protecting my eyes while flying is important. Non-polarizing sunglasses help reduce glare from the sun, allowing me to see the screen on my remote controller better, ensuring a safer flight.
12. Water
Staying hydrated is key, especially during long shoots. I always carry a bottle of water to keep my energy up while I’m out capturing those aerial views.
13. Tissues
Lastly, I never leave home without tissues. Windy and cold locations always make my nose run!
